School funding a big portion of budget debate|
The largest portion of the budget is school funding, which totals 137.5 Million dollars. Speaker Greg Adams of York acknowledges the formula used to distribute that money to school districts has become controversial this session, in part, he says because lawmakers have only heard from their school districts and have no objective analysis upon which to base their decision. Sen. Tom Carlson of Holdrege says that rural schools with rising valuations do not want to raise taxes yet, without the compromise are penalized in the current state formula. The second largest expenditure in the state budget is to pay Nebraska's portion of Medicaid.
