Lopers Fall to Wayne St|
Wayne State’s Amry Shelby and Derrell Williams combined to score 42 points to help the Wildcats pull away from Nebraska-Kearney, 78-59, Thursday night at Rice Auditorium in Wayne.
The ‘Cats are now 3-0 with all three wins over MIAA schools. The Lopers fall to 1-3 with the four games coming in the last five days.
After a 36 point effort in a win over Lincoln, Shelby remained hot tonight as he scored 19 of his points in the first half.
Finishing 7 of 14 from the field, and 8 of 8 at the line, Shelby gave his team the lead for good when he made two free throws at the 6:23 mark. That made it 24-23 and the ‘Cats went on to lead 37-30 at the break.
UNK kept the deficit manageable most of the second half and made its move when sophomore wing Pierre Newton (Laveen, Ariz.) made a three with just over six minutes to go.
However, Wayne scored the game’s next 10 points to open up an 18 point cushion, 74-56, with 2:45 left.
Williams tallied 10 of his 18 points in the second half as he made 8 of 11 field goals. He also grabbed 10 rebounds, handed out five assists and had three steals.
Wayne also got 12 points from starting forward Jordan Holdsworth. He made missed only once in six attempts as the ‘Cats shot 54% (29 of 54) on the night. They also went 13 of 13 at the line.
UNK ended the game at 41% (20 of 49) from the floor and turned the ball over 14 times. That directly led to 18 points for Wayne, who had just eight turnovers.
Through four games, the Lopers have a -6.7 turnover margin.
Senior guard Jon Henderson (15), sophomore post Tyler Shields (12) and sophomore wing Pierre Newton (11) paced the offense with Henderson and junior Mike Dentlinger (Omaha) each grabbing six boards.
