Loper Wrestling Unanimous #1|
The Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team remains No. 1 in the first regular season edition of the Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Top 25 poll.
After receiving 146 points in the preseason poll, the Lopers are now up to 160. UNK also pushes its lead over the second place team from four to 20 points. Finally, Kearney picked up all eight first place votes after receiving five in the preseason.
Rounding out the top five are MIAA member Central Oklahoma (2nd/146), St. Cloud State (3rd/138), Upper Iowa (4th/137) and Newberry, S.C. (5th/131).
Individually, Texas senior Raufeon Stots remains No. 1 at 149 lbs., Omaha sophomore Matt Lenagh is still seventh at 197 lbs. and Bennington sophomore Kevin Barrett drops one spot to fourth at 285 lbs.
A pair of Oklahoma transfers break into the rankings as redshirt freshman Daniel DeShazer is now sixth at 133 lbs. and senior Chase Nelson is eighth at 165 lbs. Both are graduates of Wichita Heights High in Kansas.
These five Lopers are currently a combined 38-15, including a 14-0 mark against D2 competition.
UNK hosts its annual Loper Open Saturday in the Health & Sports Center. Around 180 wrestlers are expected to take part with action winding down between 2-3:00 p.m.
